Role and Responsibilities
As the Team Lead of Frontend at froots, my primary mission was to strike a balance between delivering a cutting-edge web application and maintaining stability, while ensuring that the team could work efficiently and meet tight deadlines. I was committed to build an environment where innovation and speed went hand in hand, empowering the team to move fast, have a great developer experience, and consistently deliver high-quality results. Together with the team we created an exceptional product without compromising on stability or performance.
Applying Past Experiences
Drawing from past experiences, we implemented strategies to ensure seamless collaboration between our Backend and Frontend teams. To avoid breaking changes, we established an API contract that was automatically generated, providing a fully type-safe API interface layer. This added a robust level of security and consistency, allowing both teams to work confidently and independently. Additionally, we developed a palette of reusable components that were both interchangeable and adaptable. These components empowered the team to move with incredible speed, while still offering fully customizable and adjustable UI elements tailored to specific project needs.
Native Apps for iOS and Android
Alongside the web platform, we built the user-facing experience as a native app for both iOS and Android using React Native and Expo. Thanks to our monorepo, the mobile app shares its API contract, business logic and onboarding engine with the web applications, so new features land on every platform at the same time and behave consistently everywhere. Since froots operates in the financial sector, where trust and reliability are non-negotiable, stability was our top priority: roughly 80% of the product is covered by end-to-end tests, which run every night on our CI server against the latest version, with Playwright for the web and Maestro for the mobile app. A failing nightly run blocks the release, so issues are caught long before they could ever reach our customers.
